Compare packages, not salaries

A headline number tells you very little. Before you compare two offers across countries, break each one down into the components below and price them individually.

• Base salary and how it is reviewed
• Out-of-hours and on-call loading, and whether it is paid or rostered into the base
• CPD allowance and study leave days
• Professional body fees, indemnity and registration costs
• Pension or superannuation contributions
• Vehicle, phone, accommodation or relocation support
• Leave entitlement, including public holidays

Then adjust for the real cost of living

Rent or mortgage, childcare, transport, health cover and tax vary enormously between a London practice, a regional Queensland clinic and a rural New Zealand mixed practice. Two offers with identical converted salaries can leave you with very different disposable income.

Currency and remittances

If you plan to support family in South Africa or repay debt in rand, exchange-rate exposure matters. Factor in transfer costs and volatility rather than assuming today's rate.

A simple comparison method

1. Convert each package to an annual total cost-to-you-and-from-employer figure.
2. Deduct estimated income tax and mandatory contributions.
3. Deduct estimated housing, transport and childcare for the specific town, not the country.
4. Divide by the actual hours worked, including on-call.
